Objective of Industrial Hygiene surveys

When people think of industrial hygiene, the image that often comes to mind is basic janitorial duties to keep things visibly clean or perhaps encouraging employees to practice personal hygiene effectively. This is not the case! Industrial hygiene surveys are conducted to accurately assess worker exposures to chemical, physical, and biological agents in the workplace and to provide recommendations for their reduction or elimination. According to OSHA industrial hygiene is defined as, “the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling workplace conditions that may cause workers injury or illness. Periodic workplace evaluations are made to assure the effectiveness of the implemented controls and determine the need for continued medical surveillance. If there is a significant production, process, material, or control changes for a particular work operation, that work operation must be re-evaluated.

What is Indoor Industrial Hygiene?

Keeping employees safe and healthy requires knowledge of industrial hygiene, which is the science dedicated to the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, communication, and control of environmental stressors in the workplace that may result in injury, illness, impairment, or otherwise affect the well-being of workers and community members.

Importance of Industrial Hygiene (IH)

It has been estimated that 2.78 million people die annually around the globe from occupational accidents and illnesses and an additional 374 million workers suffer from non-fatal accidents. These are staggering numbers as any amount of loss is too much. If the number of deaths and injuries continues to rise, as they have over the last twenty years, so will the need for working with industrial hygienists.

Companies that implement a rigorous industrial hygiene program will benefit from:

  • Improved worker health
  • Less absenteeism due to injuries or illnesses
  • Increase worker productivity and potential
  • More efficient processes and improved technology
  • Less employee healthcare costs

In the industrial environment, The Factory Act-1948, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs), and American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienist Threshold Limit Values (ACGIH TLVs) are used as exposure limits. PELs/TLVs are defined as airborne concentrations of substances and represent conditions under which it is believed that nearly all workers may be repeatedly exposed day after day without adverse health effects.

With that being said, the core goal of occupational hygiene is to keep everyone as safe as possible and to ensure that our employees lead happy and healthy lives even after having left the company, this all begins with teamwork.
